Maha Mrityunjaya Homa at Ayiroor Chamanadi Yogeeshwara Shiva Temple
On Monday, 15th September 2025 (Chingam 30), from to , a Maha Mrityunjaya Homa will be performed at the sacred premises of Ayiroor Chamanadi Yogeeshwara Shiva Temple, jointly organized by the temple and Care Bharat Charitable Trust, which has been carrying out socio-cultural and spiritual service activities in Varkala for the past ten years.
About the Homa
Among the sacred homa rituals offered to Lord Shiva, the Mrityunjaya Homa is considered the most important. In this ritual, Shiva, usually known as the destroyer, is worshipped in his aspect as Mrityunjaya (the conqueror of death). According to Kerala tradition, Lord Shiva in the form of Mrityunjaya is invoked into the homa kunda (sacrificial fire pit) and the padma (lotus-shaped altar), and seven sacred offerings are made:
- Chittamruth
- Peralin mottu (kind of pulse)
- Sesame seeds
- Karuka grass
- Ghee
- Pure cow’s milk
- Havis / Paal Payasam (milk pudding)
In a regular Mrityunjaya Homa, each of these seven items is offered 144 times with mantras. In a Maha Mrityunjaya Homa, these offerings are made 1008 times each.
Purpose & Blessings
The purpose of the ritual is not to achieve immortality, for death is a natural law that none can escape. Instead, the Homa is believed to protect against untimely death, painful death, and misfortunes caused by illness and suffering. It blesses devotees with:
- A peaceful and effortless death (without causing suffering to others)
- A healthy life free from misery and disease
